Help Right Now

Last updated October 19, 2026

If someone you love is in danger right now, start here. Prodigal Child Ministries is a support ministry, not a crisis service, so the numbers below are the people who can help you immediately. When the crisis has passed, we are here.

If someone is in immediate danger

Call 911. This includes an overdose, a threat of suicide or violence, or a medical emergency. Stay on the line and follow the dispatcher's instructions.

If someone may be overdosing

Signs of an opioid overdose can include:

  • Will not wake up or respond to your voice or touch

  • Slow, shallow, or stopped breathing

  • Choking, gurgling, or snoring sounds

  • Blue or gray lips or fingertips

  • Very small pupils

  • Cold, clammy skin or a limp body

What to do:

  • Call 911 right away.

  • Give naloxone (Narcan) if you have it. Follow the directions on the package. If there is no response after a few minutes, a second dose may be needed.

  • Lay them on their side to help keep the airway clear, and stay with them until help arrives.

You can call for help. Georgia's 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Law gives limited protection from arrest and prosecution for drug possession to a person who calls for help in good faith during an overdose, and to the person who overdosed.

Keep naloxone on hand. Naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose. It is sold over the counter at pharmacies, and many places in Georgia give it away for free. Find a location near you at georgiaoverdoseprevention.org. If you think your loved one may be using drugs, keep naloxone at home and in the car.

For questions about a possible poisoning or a dangerous substance, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

If someone is thinking about suicide or is in a mental health crisis

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org. Free, confidential, 24/7. You can call for yourself or for someone you love.

  • Georgia Crisis and Access Line (GCAL): 1-800-715-4225, 24/7. GCAL can help connect you to crisis care in Georgia, including mobile crisis teams.

If you are with someone who may be suicidal, stay with them if it is safe to do so, ask them directly how they are doing, and listen. If their life is in immediate danger, call 911.

If you are looking for treatment

  • SAMHSA National Helpline: 1-800-662-4357. Free, confidential, 24/7 treatment referral and information, in English and Spanish.

  • Find treatment online: findtreatment.gov lists licensed treatment programs across the country.

  • Our resource lists: Counselors and Specialists and Treatment Programs recommended by parents and professionals.

When the crisis has passed

A crisis can leave you shaken, exhausted, and unsure what comes next. You do not have to carry that alone. Call us at 678-878-8324 or email info@prodigalchildministries.org to talk with a parent who has been there.
